Vicki L. West is the Sam Walton Fellow in Free Enterprise and senior lecturer in marketing in the McCoy College of Business at Texas State University. She holds a BBA, Cum Laude, and an MBA from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia. Her background includes serving as the President of the Museum of Arts in Sciences in Macon, Georgia and she also was an executive with Hospital Corporation of America serving as the Administrator of Coliseum Associates, a joint venture between physicians in Georgia and HCA.
Current Research Interests
Combining theory and action learning to enhance students’ learning; using selling process steps in the selling field, and leadership and coaching in the sales profession.
Research and Publication Activities
Ms. West has published in the Journal of Marketing Education, Journal for the Advancement of Marketing Education, Journal of Entrepreneurship Education, Journal of Contemporary Business Issues, International Journal of Production Economics, Marketing Health Sciences (formerly entitled Journal of Healthcare Marketing) as well as conference proceedings of the Southern Marketing Association, American Society of Business and Behavioral Sciences, the National Conference in Sales Management, the Marketing Educators’ Association and the Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship. She has also received several McCoy College of Business Research Enhancement Grants, plus multi-year grants from several private foundations.
Professional Service Activities
Ms. West has served on the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) National Academic Council, and worked on committees at the college and university levels. She coaches the students attending the National Collegiate Sales Competition and the Students in Free Enterprise team, and serves as the Coordinator of the Corporate Partners Program. She conceptualized, organized and implemented a summit of young technology leaders entitled “Nex-Tech.” She has served as an official mentor for the university for over ten years and was a finalist for the Presidential Award for Service two years.
Ms. West teaches classes in Professional Selling and Studies in Free Enterprise. She has also taught Principles of Marketing, Principles of Management, Small Business Management, Consumer Behavior, and Business Policy and Strategic Management.
Ms. West, in her role as Sam Walton Fellow of Free Enterprise, has led the SIFE team to twelve regional championships, ten Top 20 national finishes, one International Championship and a Final Four finish in 2008. She has won the national free enterprise Fellow of the Year award, and her former students have won Best Alumni and Best Advisory Board Member awards. In the Individual Topic Competition area, Texas State is one of the national leaders in most first, second, and third place finishes.
Ms. West also has led the professional selling students to a first place finish at the National Collegiate Sales Competition and has placed in either the top ten teams or the individual quarter finals for six years.
Her teaching awards include: Best Professor, McCoy College of Business; the Presidential Award For Excellence in Teaching at the university level; Students in Free Enterprise Hall of Fame National Award; Leavey National Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education; Teacher of the Year, Alpha Kappa Psi; Alpha Chi National Honor Society Favorite Professor Award; Teaching Award of Honor, Texas State Alumni Association; two-time winner of the Foundation of Excellence Award; National Champion of SIFE Award; and Women in Business-Advocate of the Year from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
